Moon Jar | Blacksand Flow
This hand-carved moon jar is glazed in deep brown-black with a subtle glittering sheen, inspired by the movement of water as it leaves the shore. The carved lines echo the little grooves formed in the sand when the tide recedes on a black-sand beach, creating flowing textures that shimmer like wet sand at dusk.
Traditionally, moon jars are celebrated for their rounded, full form, symbolising balance and wholeness. This piece carries that heritage while adding a coastal rhythm through its carved surface, giving it both sculptural presence and a sense of tidal energy. It stands beautifully on its own as a decorative object, or can be used as a vase for dried or fresh flowers.
Handmade in my little studio in Ōhaeawai, Aotearoa, New Zealand, this moon jar is a true one-off.
