About Mere's Pottery

Kia ora, and welcome to my pottery store!

My pottery is inspired by our natural world, especially coastal landscapes, shifting skies, earthy textures, and ocean tides. Every piece is made using stoneware clay and is thrown on a potter’s wheel, trimmed, and then fired twice in my studio.

I use a combination of glazes: store-bought, as well as numerous homemade concoctions. All glazes I use on kitchen items are foodsafe and dinnerware safe. I love experimenting with and testing my own glazes, often layering colours, to evoke misty coastlines, salt-worn shells, moonlit bays, and our ancient earth. As a huge ocean lover, most of my pieces are inspired by the oceanic feel of islands: my old home of the Hawaiian Islands, the island of Waiheke where we lived for many years, the Bay of Islands where we live now, or the two little islands of Aotearoa New Zealand, that I have been grateful to call home for 20+ years.

All my works are stamped with my makers mark featuring two symbols that are important to me - the Mannaz and Hamsa.

  •  The Mannaz Rune is an ancient symbol that signifies the collective consciousness of humanity, acknowledging our shared existence. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of individuals within a community and the importance of connection and cooperation.
  • 🪬While rooted in Jewish and Islamic traditions, the Hamsa has become a symbol of unity and intercultural understanding, representing shared beliefs and values. The Hamsa is also believed to bring good luck, happiness, protection and blessings to its owner.

Whether it's a bowl, mug, oil bottle or salt pig, my hope is that each piece brings a sense of beauty, connection and centeredness to your everyday life and rituals.

About Me

I’m Meredith, and I wear many hats! I'm a  mother, wife, musician, and night-time potter based in beautiful Aotearoa (New Zealand), creating small-batch, wheel-thrown ceramics with vintage shapes and rustic vibes. During the day I have a fulfilling career in education / tech  and during the weekends I love exploring the making of handcrafted, unique, and purposeful ceramics.

Like so many others, the pandemic was life-changing for me, and it's when I began learning the art of pottery. While based in Waiheke Island we bought an old, very well-used, manual kick-wheel, set it up in the garage, on carpet (I do not recommend this approach)!

I tried to teach myself to throw via YouTube. I was dreadfully bad. My pieces were clunky, off-centre and just not right.

A few years later and my family moved up to Northland, New Zealand. I found an incredible teacher who helped me to “get it” finally, after lots of trying and failing. Hubby still remembers that day I came home from class and said “I got it! I finally got it!”  I learned along my journey that making pottery slows me down and helps centre me too. I love the rhythm of working with my hands in clay, the patience needed when 'at the wheel,' and the beautiful unpredictability of the glazing process. What started as a personal creative outlet quickly grew into a passion for making functional pottery pieces that look and feel undeniably handmade, vintage yet timeless.

My studio was once a goat-milking shed, and now it is my own little space to get centred, unwind, and most importantly, to make all the pieces available here in my shop, or at the various markets I sell my work at. My wonderful husband Phil is an electrician, and he is a huge help in making my studio a viable and functional space.

I have been selling my work at various markets and pop-up events for some time, but this is my first online store. I hope you’ll easily find a unique piece for your home or for a one-of-a-kind gift.
